What's the story behind The Local Gem?

Baker_BlackandBillingual_1

"I wanted to create something that felt like a hidden gem."

Creating small businesses has always been a passion of mine ever since I was six years old and started my first venture selling handmade jewelry and cards to my sweet grandmas and classmates. As an adult, I was working as a freelance stylist by day and teaching yoga classes by night. I wanted to find a way to combine these two seemingly very different passions into one, cohesive brand that felt like a destination for people. I wanted to create something that felt like a hidden gem, that once stumbled upon, sparks your imagination and inspires. Out of these desires, birthed The Local Gem, a yoga studio and boutique with an artsy and eclectic vibe.

You teach Yoga in your store. How did those classes start and what value do they add to the store?

"We quickly found out there was a much higher demand for the yoga classes"

We started out being a boutique that offered 2 yoga classes a week but quickly found out there was a much higher demand for the yoga classes so we have shifted to be more of a yoga studio that also sells really fun things. We are one of the only yoga studios in the area that focuses on yoga as a healing modality for the mind, body, and spirit rather than just seeing it as a fitness routine.

What is an obstacle you have overcome during the Start:ME program?

"Start:ME has really helped me more clearly define my brand and mission statement."

Start:ME has really helped me more clearly define my brand and mission statement. I went into the program with a vague sense of what I wanted the business to be but now feel like I have a much stronger foundation by knowing who we are as a brand and exactly who we serve.
