"I had no idea it would be so hard to find moisturizing products."
My mom taught me how to style hair as a child and it became my job to do her and my sister's hair every weekend. Over time I fell in love with hair, and I did other's hair for money. Although I made other people beautiful, I hardly felt beautiful myself. I'm the only dark skinned child of my 3 siblings, and was often called ugly and perceived as mean. I became obsessed with my long hair feeling that it made me pretty. The summer before college, my mother gave me a chemical relaxer and 2 weeks later I colored my hair. Over the next 3 years, my hair continued to fall out, and in my 3rd year at Georgia Tech, I cut my hair really short to wear my natural curls. It needed to be cut because it was damaged, but also so I could release the insecurity that I had with hair. I had no idea it would be so hard to find moisturizing products. After reading Madam CJ Walker's book, and being introduced to shea butter, I rekindled my love for beauty and decided to start making my own products. In 2011 I launched my first beauty brand called Coco Curls, and in 2016 we launched again with Moisture Love because we wanted to elevate our brand story.
